Your Ultimate Guide to Electric Scooter Hire in Rotterdam
Here’s your quick and easy guide to e-scooter rental in Rotterdam.
Is e-scooter hire in Rotterdam possible in 2024?
Ah, Rotterdam, the city of bikes, canals, and stroopwafels. But wait, what about electric scooters? Sadly, these zippy little vehicles aren’t yet welcome on Rotterdam’s charming streets. Why, you ask?
Well, for starters, they’re banned for safety concerns. Apparently, the Dutch government is worried that the mix of high speeds and narrow bike paths might result in an influx of scooter-induced accidents.
Heineken + Coffeshops + Electric Scooters = Potential Death
And let’s not forget about the intoxicated travellers and locals. While Rotterdam’s bustling nightlife scene is something to behold, the powers that be aren’t entirely convinced that inebriated folks should be trusted with electric scooters.
It’s hard enough to keep your balance on two feet after a night out, let alone on two tiny wheels. Plus, who knows where those e-scooters might end up if left in the hands of a rowdy crowd?
You can buy an e-scooter in Rotterdam
You can easily buy an e-scooter in Rotterdam, stores like Media Markt are full of them. But if you ride your electric scooter in the streets in Rotterdam expect to be fined €300.
That might seem mad, but you can buy a kitchen knife from many places, but that doesn’t mean you can wave it around in the park. Not an exact comparison to e-scooter rental in Rotterdam I know, but hopefully you get the point. For now, in the Netherlands, an electric scooter is for the home and garden only.
What alternatives are there to e-scooter hire in Rotterdam?
But fear not, although e-scooter hire in Rotterdam is a no-no, all is not lost. If you’re looking for another way to zip around the city, there are plenty of options available.
For starters, there are the trusty old bicycles. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they’re also a great way to take in the sights and sounds of Rotterdam. The city is filled with bike hire shops and there’s also a new app the national rail company that’s worth having a look at.
If you’re looking for something a little speedier, why not try an electric moped? There are a few apps around, but the most popular one seems to be Go Sharing. They’re a fun and efficient way to get around town with only a few extra rules and regulations compared to a standard bike.
So, while electric scooter hire may not be legal in Rotterdam just yet, there are plenty of other ways to get around and enjoy all that this beautiful city has to offer.
The rules for riding bikes, mopeds and scooters in Rotterdam.
One final thing to consider is that whether you’re cruising on a bike or zipping along on an electric moped there are a few rules you’ll want to keep in mind to ensure a safe and happy ride.
First and foremost, make sure to stick to the designated bike paths. You don’t want to be weaving in and out of traffic like a rogue cyclist, do you? Of course not – that’s not very chill. So, stick to the bike lanes!
Next up, be sure to follow the same traffic signals and signs as other vehicles. You don’t want to be that one cyclist who’s going the wrong way down a one-way street coming face to face with a tram. You won’t win that fight. So, stop at red lights, yield to pedestrians, and use hand signals when turning.
And speaking of safety, wearing a helmet is always a good idea. Sure, if you’re lucky to have hair it may cramp your hairdo a bit, but better safe than sorry, right?
Will e-scooter hire in Rotterdam be allowed soon?
Unfortunately, electric scooter hire in Rotterdam isn’t possible now and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon. The good news, though, is that Rotterdam is one of the best cities in Europe with or without e-scooters! And there are plenty of other ways to get around.
Rotterdam is one of my favourite cities in the whole world. I’ve also written a guide about the best bars and also the best things to do in the city. You need to take a trip to neighbouring Schiedam if you have time. It’s like a Dutch fairytale, and that’s without visiting a smartshop!
