Best places to rent a scooter in Dalat
Let’s start this ultimate guide with the best places to get your hands on a scooter in the misty hills of Dalat, Vietnam.
Motorbike DaLat – My Favourite Bike Hire Shop in Dalat
If you’re looking for the most loved bike hire store in Dalat, this is it. When it comes to friendly service, quality bikes and decent prices, Motorbike DaLat has it all. It’s also conveniently located next to the lake so you don’t have to walk far from the centre to get a great deal.
If you want my advice, you should try Motorbike Dalat first, and then in the possible event that all of his bikes are taken, you should move on to the others on my list below.
In early 2024 prices were around 150,000 VND per day, which is the standard price from any reputable scooter hire store in Dalat for a 125cc bike. You can either leave your passport or cash as a deposit and if you want the bike for five or more days, there’s room for negotiation on the daily rental price.
You can message the owner on +84918857579 to enquire or pre-order for your arrival, his English is great.
Address:47A Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, Phường 1, Đà Lạt, Vietnam
Happy Scooter Rental Dalat – A Great ‘Plan B’
Just because Motorbike Dalat is my favourite, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t more great options when it comes to renting a scooter in Dalat. One such option is Happy Scooter Rental Dalat.
As with Motorbike Dalat, prices are set at around 150,000 VND for a standard 125cc scooter, and cash or your passport can be used as a deposit.
Like many scooter rental stores in Vietnam, it’s not their only business venture. So don’t be put off when you see the sign selling laundry services. They are a proper scooter rental store too. You just have the chance of getting your dirty pants washed while zipping around on one of their well-maintained scooters.
You can message them at any time on +84975715306.
Address: 39 Đường Trương Công Định, Phường 1, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Vietnam
Hai’s Motorbike Rentals – Best for touring other provinces
Third on my list of the best places to hire a scooter in Dalat is Hai’s Motorbike Rentals. All the standard things like price and deposit are the same as the other two, the difference here is that they allow trips to other provinces. I rented a bike from here, rode it to Nha Trang for a few days and then came back.
Many other scooter rental stores don’t like you straying too far from the local area, but that no problem at Hai’s Motorbike Rentals. Just be honest with them so they know what you’re planning.

Dalat Scooter Rental – The Rules
The main thing you need to ride legally in Dalat, or anywhere on your Asia travel path, is an international driving permit, or IDP as it’s commonly known. It’s this little paper booklet that local police will want to see if you are unfortunate to be stopped while riding.
Get an IDP
I’ve been stopped more times than I can remember and every single time I’ve been waved on once I flashed them my IDP. If you don’t have one you’re likely to be fined. How much depends on your negotiation skills and how much money they see you have.
A good tip is to always have a small amount of cash in one place, say 100,000 VND, then if stopped, tell them that all you have and you might be lucky that they’ll take it and let you go. If you show them a fresh roll of notes you’ll do well to keep any of it.
You can buy an IDP from your home country before you travel, in the UK the Post Office can sort it in one visit. If you’re already on your travels fear not, the guys at the International Drivers Association are modern fellas and can email you one within a couple of minutes.
Don’t forget to use the code IDPSketchy10 at the checkout stage to get your 10% off.
The scooter rental companies don’t care one little bit if you have an IDP or not, they just want your money and your signature. The rest is your responsibility.
Get insured
Hopefully, you already have travel insurance. If you plan to rent a scooter in Dalat or anywhere in Vietnam, you need to check that your policy allows you to ride a scooter. If it does, check what size engine you’re covered for as many don’t cover you for anything over 125 or 150cc.
The price to rent a scooter in Dalat in 2024
The standard price to rent a scooter in Dalat is 150,000 VND per day. That’s about $6 per day and is based on a 125cc bike.
You usually need to leave a deposit too. You can leave your passport or a load of cash. It’s your call which you’re happiest with, it’s always a nervy time when you leave a deposit, but the three companies I’ve recommended have a very trustworthy reputation.
Is Dalat a good place to rent a scooter?
Dalat is the perfect place for both confident riders and novices to rent and ride a scooter. The streets in the city are quiet and therefore much less dangerous than in Vietnam’s bigger cities.
Venture out of the city to explore the stunning countryside and visit places like Langbiang Mountain. Explore the intricate mosaics of Linh Phuoc Pagoda, and be captivated by the powerful beauty of Elephant Waterfall. Or just meander through the peaceful countryside, uncovering hidden gems like vegetable farms and charming local villages.
